Manager, Public Relations & Corporate Communications

The public relations team manages earned media in conjunction with multiple PR agencies, ensuring that PR is a strategic and creative channel with a direct effect on brand reputation. Successful candidates must possess strategic planning skills as well as the ability to forge close working relationships with cross-functional teammates and agency partners. Candidates should also have a high comfort level providing strategic communications counsel to senior executives.  Planning skills, written and verbal communication, relationship-building, problem-solving, and ability to translate brand goals into earned success are all key requirements critical for success in this role.  This role also requires work and availability outside standard working hours.


Strategic Planning

  • Work with director of public relations to develop and refine company communications strategy
  • Provide communications counsel to other Panera business units as well as to senior leaders in the organization
  • Coordinate with various internal marketing functions and agency teams to develop communications strategies and tactical plans that support Panera initiatives.

Corporate and Brand Media Relations

  • Develop strategic plan for corporate communications including executive thought leadership, speaking opportunities, awards, proactive media strategy and more
  • Oversee campaign execution, in conjunction with agencies, including managing/attending press tours and launch events
  • Manage and respond to day-to-day inbound media inquiries in partnership with agencies
  • Coordinate with the field and franchise communities to respond to inbound media inquiries
  • Staff interviews and provide messaging counsel to senior executives
  • Research content for and draft company statements, messaging and press materials
  • Work with agency to monitor news coverage and distribute daily monitoring reports to Team Panera

Crisis and Issues Management

  • Member of Panera’s Crisis team alongside the director of public relations, interfacing with Panera legal, QA, operations and customer care
  • Provide strategic counsel to senior leadership and messaging support when issues arise
  • Manage agency and retain counsel when necessary
  • Research content for and draft talking points for issues as they arise
  • Draft communications materials including media statements, backgrounding documents and more


  • 7-10 years of experience in the public relations field
  • Agency experience strongly preferred
  • Crisis communications experience strongly preferred
  • High energy self-starter with an unapologetic bias for action
  • Ability to quickly understand and vet potential brand risk and craft issues response strategy
  • Must be able to work autonomously with people at all levels within the organization
  • Experience managing or working with agency resources a plus
  • Ability to multi-task, work successfully with teams, and work under pressure
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional project management skills
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably with a concentration in public relations, marketing or communications
  • Flexibility to respond to issues as they happen required
  • Occasional travel required
